Who can join the Let's Talk About It discussion series?
Anyone can sign up. However, the books are at an adult reading level and may not be suitable for younger readers.
What if I don't finish a book? Can I still participate in the discussions?
Absolutely! In fact, some books in the Muslim Journeys are considered "difficult reads." It may also be possible that a particular book just doesn't interest you. Even if you don't get into a book, feel free to attend the discussion. Who knows? Maybe you'll be ready to give the book another try afterwards.
Why are the Dean B. Ellis Library and the Jonesboro Public Library participating in this Let's Talk About It : Muslim Journeys programming?
The series isn't about politics or religion, it's about people. Islam is the second largest religion and one of the fastest growing religions in the United States and in the world. To help foster global citizenship, programming such as the Muslim Journeys series helps to introduce citizens to how others live, how they believe and how they worship.
Are the libraries promoting a particular religion?
No, not at all. Libraries are neutral places for information. The books, the discussions and other programs in this series are simply to introduce the general public to the topic. No promotion of beliefs, condemnation of beliefs or attempts at conversion will be tolerated.
Are my tax dollars being used for this programming?
The original Muslim Journeys Bookshelf grant was funding solely through private grants. The Let's Talk About It portion of the series is partially funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities with additional funding through private sources.
Do the libraries represent my beliefs?
Libraries, in general, try to be neutral. Both libraries contain books regarding a wide variety of religions including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and more. If you need help finding books or other materials, please don't hesitate to ask for assistance!
Can I donate books, videos, etc to balance the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf collection?
Anyone may donate to the libraries. Once items are donated, it becomes property of the library. Trained library staff will then evaluate the material in accordance to each library's collection development policy. Items that fit the library's collection development policy will then be added to the library's collection. Unfortunately, libraries cannot guarantee that donated items will become part of the permanent library collection.
