Identifying and Overcoming Bias: Become Culturally Competent

Learn about bias and how to overcome it.

Cultural Competence

One way to overcome your biases is to become culturally competent. Cultural Competence is the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with people from other cultures or belief systems. Many of our biases are formed in our youths from the adults around us, television, media, news, and a general lack of exposure to people not like us. Fortunately the more positive interactions we have with different types of people, the more we see that our biases aren't true and the more accepting our brains become to letting our biases go.

Become Culturally Competent

To become culturally competent, one must actively learn about different cultures and people not like you.
This may mean getting out of your comfort zone.

  • Interact with diverse groups
  • Listen without judgement
  • Read books, articles, blogs, websites, memoirs
  • Attend conferences, workshops, and training opportunities
  • Learn a new language
  • Meet new people
  • Volunteer
  • Travel

For me, the Invisible People YouTube channel completely changed
how I view and interact with people experiencing homelessness.
