About the Exhibit

The Great War traveling exhibit was created to commemorate the centennial anniversary of World War I.The exhibit memorializes the impact this war had on millions of military personnel who served in the war and their families .There were over 70,000 soldiers serving from Arkansas. This exhibit also shows the chronology of the war and many facets of conflict going on during and after the war.

"Fighting the Great War in Song"

Dr. Michael B. Dougan, Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus, Arkansas State University.

Perfect! War, anti-war, English (Blighty), French, German and even perhaps Italian and Russian songs. The presentation will focus on how songs influenced public opinion. A PowerPoint presentation based partly on the covers of sheet music accompanies the presentation.

Arkansas based author/scholar will speak to the audience about the impact of World War I in this state from a variety of perspectives. She will speak about her book, Faithful to Our Tasks: Arkansas’s Women and the Great War (2017). She will speak based on some amazing findings from Arkansas’s archives. After the presentation, you will know why you should appreciate you grandmothers and great grandmothers’ contributions.

World War I Memorial Tree planting ceremony

Through a partnership of the Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee and the Arkansas Forestry Commission the Dean B. Ellis Library will receive a Willow Oak tree along with some soil from the Meuse-Argonne National Cemetery in France to be added when the tree is planted. to honor the 70, 000 Arkansans, which includes the 1,380 sons of Craighead County that served during the Great War and those that died while in service.  There will be a WWI Memorial Plaque added beside the tree at a later date. Sponsored by Northeast Arkansas Monument Company of Jonesboro, Arkansas.
