Acknowledging the Use of AI - Anytime that you use AI in your work, ethically you must acknowledge that you are doing so. This page also contains a brief breakdown of citing AI-generated work from various citation styles.
We use artificial intelligence everyday, often without knowing it. Artificial intelligence (AI) is computer programming and learning that simulates human intelligence and learning. Google, Siri, search engines, self-driving cars, automated stocks, and virtual assistants are examples of AI.
Recently, a new form of AI, called generative AI, has been developed. Generative AI can take raw data and make something new out of it. The most famous examples of generative AI are ChatGPT for text-based applications and Midjourney for image-based applications. When used as a tool, AI can be amazing. Students can use it to come up with paper topics, highlight relevant content, test their critical thinking skills, and help make existing content more accessible for those with disabilities. The key is making sure you're using AI as a tool and not reusing AI-generated work as your own work or for your assignments.
Colleges, departments, and individual faculty member are responsible for deciding how AI can be used in their classes. Some faculty may have allow it throughout the whole class, some may allow the use of AI for certain assignments, and some may prohibit the use of AI altogether. It is the faculty member's responsibility to have a clear directions about the use of AI in their class in their syllabi and assignment guidelines; and it is the student's responsibility to make sure they review any AI Use Statements, syllabi, and/or assignment instructions.
Approaches for Syllabus Policies on AI Use
Use Prohibited In courses where students work independently without collaborating or using external tools, faculty may entirely prohibit the use of AI. Clearly informing students of this policy and explaining why collaboration and tool usage are not permitted is necessary to foster understanding of such a policy. Honest discussions about the importance of independent work in the class can help students become aware of the academic, professional, or disciplinary norms underlying the course or program.
Example syllabus statement: "AI tools, including chatbots, writing assistants, and content generators, are not permitted for any assignments, exams, or other coursework in this class. All work must be your own, and the use of AI will be considered a violation of academic integrity policies. Please contact me if you have any questions about this policy."
Use with Permission In select courses, it might be suitable to permit students to use AI tools in specific instances or assignments but not in others. In such cases, instructors should clearly communicate with students about when and how they can or cannot utilize these tools and how they can receive permission to do so. It would be beneficial also to explain the reasoning behind permitting these tools in certain scenarios while prohibiting them in others.
Example syllabus statement: "The use of AI tools for assignments in this class is permitted only with prior approval. If you wish to use AI for any part of your work, please consult with me first to discuss appropriate guidelines. Unauthorized use of AI will be treated as an academic integrity violation."
Use with Acknowledgement In courses and programs where collaboration and the use of advanced AI tools are permitted or encouraged, it might be appropriate to authorize students to utilize these tools throughout the course, provided they clearly cite or acknowledge their use. In such cases, it is important to explicitly specify the type and format of citation or acknowledgment methods students should employ.
Example syllabus statement: "Students may use AI tools (e.g., Grammarly, ChatGPT) to assist with their coursework, but any use must be clearly acknowledged. In your assignments, please indicate where and how AI was used. Failure to disclose the use of AI will be considered a violation of academic integrity. Please contact me if you have any questions about this policy."
Use Freely Permitted In courses or programs where students often collaborate and use advanced AI tools, it could be suitable to permit students to use these tools without the explicit requirement to cite or acknowledge their use. However, it remains critical for students in such circumstances to grasp the boundaries, risks, and ethical applications of those tools.
Example syllabus statement: "Students are encouraged to use AI tools as part of their learning and assignments in this class. AI can be a valuable resource for enhancing creativity, improving writing, or generating ideas. However, it is essential that AI use complements your learning, rather than replacing it. Please use these tools ethically and responsibly to support your own understanding and skills development."
