Artificial Intelligence (AI) - According to IBM, artificial intelligence (AI) is the combination of computer science and datasets to enable problem-solving
Conversational AI - AI that understands, processes and generates human language.
Generative AI - AI programs that can take raw data and “learn” how to create new data or works through human generated prompts. Examples include ChatGPT, Midjourney, Dall-E, Gemini, LLaMa, Microsoft Copilot, and Stable Audio.
Narrow AI - AI tool or software that is trained for a specific task. Examples include predictive text, Siri, Alexa, Google Maps, Tesla, and other AI tools that we use on a regular basis that we may no even recognize as AI.
Strong AI - An AI theory that states that artificial intelligence requires self-awareness and/or sentience to be "true" AI. Examples include Data from Star Trek, HAL 9000 from Space Odyssey, Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, and Megan from the movie Megan.
Hidden AI - Hidden AI is AI-generated work that is not declared to be AI. For example, using AI to do your work and claiming it as your own is hidden AI. While using AI is not a bad, hiding that you are is.
Large Language Model (LLM) - LLMs are a type of machine learning that can understand and generate human text. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are an example of a LLM.
ChatGPT - ChatGPT is the leading generative AI tool from OpenAI. ChatGPT 3.5 is the free version and only generates text-based answers. ChatGPT is the faster, larger paid version that can generate text and images.
Prompt - A prompt is the set of words that the user types into the AI tool to generate results. There are various types of prompts such as commands and queries.
Command - Commands are a type of prompt that instructs the AI tool to perform a task, such as "Write a summary of the services from the Dean B. Ellis Library at Arkansas State University."
Query - Queries are a type of prompt that asks a question, such as "Where is Arkansas State University located?"
Text-to-image - In image AI tools, such as Midjourney and DALL-E, users describe the images they want with text. The program then uses the text prompts to generate an image. Text prompts may include subject matter, colors, art style, medium, and lighting.
Text-to-video - In image AI tools, such as Synthesia and Invideo, users describe the images they want with text. The program then uses the text prompts to generate an image.
Text-to-audio - In audio AI tools, such as Stable Audio, users describe the sound or music they want with text. The program then uses the text prompts to generate music.
AI Hallucinations - AI Hallucinations occur when an AI program generates false or incorrect information and presents it as truth. Libraries are already receiving requests for books and articles made-up by AI tools.
